Gardener Prunes A Topiary Paradise- Tomas Balino

Gardening's not really my thing, but I really liked this NPR piece by Catherine Welsch profiling Pearl Fryer:

What I like best is how the piece really manages to make you feel like you're at the scene. Both Welsch and the person who introduces her start out with these great, vivid introductions that draw you in. Take a look at Welsch's first sentence: "Bushes spiraling toward the sky line the country road that leads to Pearl Fryer's topiary paradise." I also thought Welsch did an excellent job of weaving ambient sound into her interview, like when Pearl is showing her his hedge trimmer. Kudos to Catherine for also knowing to ask the right questions; I was pretty impressed when I heard Pearl had no formal training in gardening! Welsch also crafts a pretty solid narrative throughout.
