"My name is Spade. Sam Spade. License number 357896, issued by the Police Department of San Francisco. Occupation: private detective--sometimes known as private eye."
I love old time radio theater for the same reason I preferred books over movies when I was little--more room for the imagination. Radio (and books) force you to become involved in the story in a way that a movie never can, because if you are staring at a screen you are always a spectator, one step removed. I grew up listening to stories on tape that I borrowed from the library (like "The Maltese Falcon"), which could hold my attention for hours. I would close my eyes and "create" the images in my mind as I listened, which gave me the feeling of being somewhere else. Detective stories were my favorite because of the element of suspense, and trying to guess "whodunit."
There are some fun sound effects in this clip, but what really carries the story is the acting. The structure of the story also helps hold listeners' attention, starting with some exciting action and then throwing in plenty of unexpected twists and turns. And the short, punchy 30s/40s-style dialogue is also well-suited to radio.
